Soon we will celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. An important aspect of this celebration is gift giving. Words from John’s gospel lead us to the perfect giving. John writes: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). We gather the following from John’s words: First, God’s giving springs from his love. Second, God gives the best he has: his only Son. Third, God does not want anyone to perish.
There are several attitudes toward a gift. Some people joyfully receive a gift and treasure it. Sometimes people receive a gift but fail to show their appreciation. Still other may simply refuse a gift. God’s gift of his only Son has been met by these attitudes.
Many have received the gift of Jesus Christ and treasure him in their lives. There are people who have received Christ but do not appreciate him as they should. And there are many people who have heard the gospel and thereby been offered the gift of Christ, yet have refused this most precious gift of all gifts. What is my attitude toward God’s gift of his only Son to me?
Prayer: Father God, thank you for giving me your only begotten Son Jesus Christ so that I may not perish, but may have eternal life. Help me to treasure him every day of my life. Amen.
