Matthew 24_4

Matthew 24:1-14

In today’s text, Jesus spoke to his disciples about signs of the end times. There are many things going on in the world today that make it seem as though we may be living in the end times. In fact, numerous evangelical preachers have been preaching for decades that such a time has already come upon us. How can we know?

Jesus tells us that no one knows, only the Father. Nevertheless, Jesus tells us to be watchful, to be prepared because none of us can be sure when such time may arrive. What then should our response be? We buy life insurance and save portions of our income for future challenges in this world because we never know when some calamity might spring upon us. Likewise, Jesus says “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20).

Jesus states that as we love and care for others in need, we are storing up treasures in heaven (Luke 18:22). Jesus also assures us “whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Where in this world can you find better life assurances than that? So, love and live like you believe it!

Prayer: Thank you Lord Jesus, for coming into this world to teach us how to love, and to assure us of our place in your eternal kingdom through our faith. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Rev. Robert V. Alle, NALC pastor.
