Today’s lesson from Amos reminded me of the story about an individual who found themselves in a hurricane. As the story goes, the individual was warned to leave, yet they refused. As the storm raged, the flood waters rose, a rescue truck came by to warn them of the danger and begged them to leave; they refused. Later, as the storm waters raised higher, a boat came, again warning them of the danger and begged them to leave; again they refused. Finally, the flood forced the individual onto their roof. A helicopter came and as before, the individual refused to leave. Before long the individual drowned.
Time and again God sent leaders, judges and prophets to warn the Israelites to turn from their sinful ways and too often they refused. Instead of listening to God’s warning of the disasters and punishment to come they looked to their own wisdom. It is a lesson for us.
The season of Advent is a time to look forward to His return and a time to share with others the salvation that Jesus brought when he came over two thousand years ago. Advent is a time to heed the warning to “Be alert at all times.”
Prayer: Heavenly Father, prepare us for the return of your Son and help us to share the saving news of Jesus Christ, in his name we pray. Amen.
