Matthew 16_15

Matthew 16:13-20

Moses asked God what name to give, when the Israelites would ask, who sent him to bring them out of Egypt.

Jesus asks his apostles, “Who do you say that I am?”

The Bible has many names for Jesus: Word of God, Teacher, Rabbi, Prophet, Savior, Truth, Light, Door, Gate, King of kings, Lord of lords, Son of God, The Messiah.

Simon answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus told him, his answer was not his own, but was given to him from the Father in heaven. Jesus renamed Simon Peter (Rock) Jesus declared that Peter’s “rock solid” confession of faith in him would be the foundation for his Church.

Nothing has changed; the question for each and every one of us today, is always the same. It is the key to eternity and salvation. Jesus continues to call out to each of us saying; “Who do you say that I am?”

Prayer: Precious Lord Jesus, open our hearts to the truth and reality of your abiding presence. Amen.

That is still the question today. Will we be willing to stand up and say “you are the Christ.” Will we say that in front of our accusers the way so many who follow Christ in the Middle East who have lost their lives in the name of Christ?
