Right judgment is an instruction from Jesus. He was going about accomplishing the will of the Father. He instructed that those who do the will of the Father do so because they recognize God’s authority, rather than acting of their own will. The religious experts questioning Jesus knew the Law of Moses, but Jesus had complete knowledge, divine authority, and his actions were grounded in the will of the Father.
Experts sometimes use their knowledge to demean the faith of others. Our best defense is a great offense; studying and knowing God’s Word deflects the barbs of those who do not desire his will.
The relationship between Jesus and Mosaic Law is addressed in the details about circumcision. The Law of Moses meets the grace and truth of Jesus. While Jesus does not disregard the law, he does completely what Moses did in part. Jesus performed deeds of mercy on the Sabbath, an individual sample of the wholeness provided when he cuts around our defects, purifying us through our baptism into his death and resurrection.
Prayer: God of mercy, we thank you for the wholeness yet to come, and we ask that you help us to do your holy will. Amen.
