Jeremiah 2:1-13, 29-32; Romans 1:16-25; John 4:43-54
Sören Kierkegaard wrote, “In matters of faith every generation has to begin again.” Indeed, it goes beyond even that; faith must begin again in every person. But in each person and in every generation, faith is always delivered through the gospel. Reason cannot achieve faith. Brute force and determination will never believe the good news. Reason is determined to find its own righteousness. It wants to work at it until it achieves a thing by wrestling it to the ground. But that would be to believe in the created instead of the Creator.
So, let us begin again today, to believe in the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ (Rom 3:22). Let us believe by virtue of the Word itself, not because of miracles or answered prayers or even because of the testimony of creation. “Hear the word of the Lord” and do not exchange the glory of God for your own glorious deeds. They will never hold water. (Jer 2:13)
Prayer: Open my heart to your Word, O God, that I may live by faith in Christ my Lord. Amen.
