We grow up in a world full of mistruths. As toddlers, we hear about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and fibs when our baby teeth fall out; put them under your pillow and some fairy will take them and leave you money. Eventually, we discover the truth; our parents have lied to us. It’s no wonder that so many find the Gospel of Jesus Christ difficult to believe. We’ve taken to heart the notion that if anything sounds too good to be true, it is.
Our passage for today opens with what many have dubbed as the gospel in a nut shell. In a world full of falsehoods, this is a truth that sounds too good to be true. We are stuck, at some point in our lives, asking why so much effort was taken to write it all down and pass the gospel story along to us. John gives us a straight forward answer: so that you might believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in his name. John 20:30-31 God declared it, prophets foretold it, angels announced it, Jesus did it, and you can believe it.
Prayer: God of all creation, help us to grasp the truth of your Word, and in the Good News about Jesus your Son, our Savior. Amen.
