Mark 1:1-8

The opening verses of the Gospel of Mark proclaim Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the beginning of his public ministry. In preparation, John the Baptist was performing baptisms of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. An adventure of unimaginable scope was about to unfold. A servant unlike any ever seen before was about to burst forth in the world they knew. Very soon miracles, healings, sermons, and teachings, different than anything they had ever heard or experienced would take place. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection would herald wondrous things to come for all of his followers who would come to believe in him as their Savior.

Today, the adventure continues. As we walk through this Advent season we baptize , commune, and celebrate in preparation for the coming of our Messiah. Following Advent season, the adventure of Jesus Christ will reopen before each one of us. We anticipate all sorts of wondrous blessings into which the baby Jesus will lead us. For now, like the saints before us, we hold fast to the same faith that guided those who gathered around John the Baptist so long ago—baptizing and cleansing in preparation for Jesus’ return.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, as we walk through this Advent season, illuminate your presence in our innermost beings and guide us to herald the wondrous story of your arrival so long ago and your arrival still to come. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Rev. Robert V. Alle, NALC Pastor.
