job38-5

Job 38:1-17; Acts 15:22-35; John 11:45-54

From oldest times, we have not comprehended the mind of God. Job did not. Some people in the early Church (as now) troubled the brothers with upsetting words (Acts 15:24). Caiaphas’ prophecy would have upset us. Why does Jesus have to die? That is not fair! Indeed, it was not fair. Yet it was the will of God. At the time, we probably would not have understood.

Misunderstanding comes through unbelief, specifically a mistrust of God—that he is in control. Whatever is happening around us, that we think unfair or even unbiblical, is in God’s hands. He is in control. He was in control when he set limits on creation. He is still in control; there are still limits. It is left to us to believe, to trust, and to be faithful—and to pray: Thy will be done.

Prayer: Holy Father of heaven, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Mark Ryman,
Pastor of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Asheboro, NC.
