“A New York columnist set out one time not long ago to prove that no one really listened to what anyone said at a cocktail party and, when he was invited to such a party, he always would arrive late. When he arrived the hostess greeted him and he explained why he was late. ‘I had to stop for a moment and murder my mistress, and it took longer than I thought.’ Without blinking an eye, the hostess said she understood perfectly, saying, ‘I was almost late myself, everyone is quite busy. Enjoy yourself. Have a good time.’ We are caught up in a sea, a world of words…”1 but often never listen or take them seriously.
This is not so with the words of Jesus. In this healing miracle, his words had authority backed up by actions. The people were all amazed since his was a new teaching—with authority! (Mark 1:27)
There is a direct connection between mere words and actions. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) Without the cross his words would have been empty. Do our words and actions match up?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, renew our hearts to walk in your ways. Amen.
