1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, Matthew 5:11-16
When Paul made his way to Thessalonica, many heard the gospel for the first time. Some might have thought him crazy to believe so earnestly a story of salvation through a man once dead, but alive again. Yet, others were gripped by the power of the Holy Spirit and came to extraordinary faith. Paul gives thanks that the light of their faith is not diminished by earthly powers opposed to God. Certainly God chose them to be his messengers of the good news.
Christians today are no less chosen by God. We bring a message of God’s grace to a world turned inwardly upon itself. Many may think we are also crazy to believe such a story. Yet, through the sharing of the gospel, the power of the Holy Spirit brings people to faith. Sharing faith requires patience; it requires that we earnestly believe and enthusiastically do the work of the gospel.
With the fire of the Holy Spirit burning within their hearts, the Thessalonians understood they were chosen. God filled their hearts with faith, hope and love and they shared the gospel as Paul first shared it with them. People of God, you too are chosen. Share your faith.
Prayer: Come Holy Spirit; fill the hearts of your people and kindle within us the fire of your love, that we too may share the good news of Christ. Amen.
