Promises are important but when someone demonstrates those words in action, we receive much more. Today is Maundy Thursday and Christians around the world will gather for worship to remember Jesus’ demonstration of God’s love through the Lord’s Supper, the washing of feet, and his obedience in dying for us on the cross. Jesus demonstrates his love for us when we receive the bread and wine and hear the promise, “the body of Christ given for you,” and “the blood of Christ shed for you.” Jesus’ words point to his greatest demonstration of love as he took on our sins and died on the cross for the world.
After supper, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet to demonstrate his love and also our call to servant discipleship. After giving them this example, Jesus said “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35) Maundy means “commandment” and on this night we remember Jesus’ command to love one another as he has loved us by giving us new life.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for demonstrating your love for us on the cross. Amen.
