As a child, I was always fascinated with the mechanisms of locks. It always amazed me how a simple key would open such a fortified lock; however, I soon found out that each lock was tailor-made to be opened with one unique key. As in our reading today, the key to life, healing, love, forgiveness, and grace comes from one key: Jesus.
When the Syrophoenician woman approached Jesus on behalf of her daughter’s purification, something amazing happened. The oppressed girl was made whole! This miracle happened because the woman asked for Jesus’ intervention. That seems to be the “key” here—asking. We simply shy away from totally depending upon Jesus for help, because we are so independent and self-centered. As the reading continues, two others were made whole by coming to Jesus for help. However, they were told not to tell others of miracles, but they told anyway.
When we have been touched by the very love of Jesus we have to tell others! Just as a lock is opened with a unique key, we too are opened with the unique key of Jesus. Do not hold back in seeking Jesus’ life giving power of love.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, fill us with such joy and hope that we may share the Good News of Jesus’ healing love with all we meet. Amen.
