John 18:15-18, 25-27
In Matthew 16:16, Peter confessed his belief in Jesus as the Christ and Son of the living God. In response, Jesus said “on this rock I will build my church.” In John 18, Peter denied knowing him three times just as Jesus predicted he would. How would we have responded in such a situation?
Just as Jesus knew how Peter would respond, he also knows our many weaknesses. Such is our Lord’s immeasurably insightful understanding and love for us. He knows us and our propensities for betrayal. Despite our wanderings and betrayals, our Savior invites us back into fellowship with him. He never gives up on us.
Jesus alone offers the solace, forgiveness, and the healing we need in our relationship with God. We are on the cusp of the season of Lent, a season that is all about our betrayals and God’s abundant forgiveness through Jesus Christ. During this Lenten season, explore Jesus’ ministry, contemplate your many personal betrayals, and discover how thoroughly Jesus Christ has addressed them all.
Prayer: Loving God, help us to realize the depth of sin in our lives and the boundless depth of your loving forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
